Clinical Concierge Overview

Q: What exactly is Toby Talk?

A: Toby Talk is an open forum for questions, answers, and discussion about how you can use Clinical Concierge and the MySelfScantm techniques to become your most complete "self," via this column, my blog and podcasts.

Q: I'm not familiar with this. What is MySelfScan?

A: I use a theory on the self that I've developed called MySelfScan with my clients. The concepts and ideas of MySelfScan come from applying them first to myself and then sharing them with others. The concepts allowed me to activate who I really am as a human being. My experiences traveling the world have helped this concepts come together. It is a powerful tool that allows individuals of all ages to better understand themselves; their families, communities and the world. If you open yourself up to the process, it can do the same for you.

Q: How does it work?

A: It provides a road map to personal activation and successful engagement in life: no more sitting on the sidelines. The theory teaches us to assess our current self from intellectual, physical and emotional perspectives. It provides tools and resources to maximize these vital and key parts of ourselves. Through self-exploration and focus on all three areas, it is possible to identify areas where things might be out of alignment, causing a need for healing. It gives people a tool to develop an action plan to activate themselves.

Q: So basically, you use this tool to get an assessment of where you are and how you can make yourself better. What kinds of things can it help with?

A: MySelfScan and the model it contains teaches our Clinical Concierge employees so they can be work with a wide range of issues that affect a persons: depression, anxiety, substance abuse, self harm, sense of self issues, relationships with others such as oppositional defiance and family conflict; and behaviors which seem to hold an individual back such as self worth issues, sports performance and business focus issues and gaming addictions.

Self-activation techniques will allow you to address these issues and concerns before they become entrenched and impacting other areas of your life. Learning about the ideas taught through this theory and subsequent techniques will allow you to identify strengths and weaknesses, better understanding yourself and others, and bring about lasting change in your life.

Q: That is amazing! From your viewpoint, how is this different from the normal course of action with counselors and therapists?

A: First, I don't maintain a traditional office. Many of my clients are adolescents, young adults, or family members, so we meet where they are comfortable; in a park to throw a football around, taking a hike, or meeting at a quiet coffeeshop. Some clients prefer to interact with me via phone, email, or text message, and that works too as they tend to find comfortable places in their own communities to call or reach out from.

Once we find common ground to talk, we can begin working on how the process of using MySelfScan techniques can revolutionize how individuals better understand themselves and proactively move through life. Working together we can quickly assess and provide techniques and personal action plans that bring about positive change.

Q: This is such a unique approach: I can see how it helps that person, but how does it "change the world?"

A: By radiating a positive attitude during our daily activities, our family and community interactions are enhanced, spreading positive growth. Those who work through the process are able to activate themselves and live with a confidence and understanding many have never experienced, or been able to sustain long-term. Our clients discover "anchor points" that they use to enhance their full self and increase the total amount of their "self" that is actively used an applied on a daily basis.

Q: This is a theory you developed. Can you tell me a little bit more about your background and how you developed your theory?

A: Sure, I graduated from undergraduate and graduate school from Boston College, after growing up in New Hampshire. I focused my studies on at-risk youth, adolescents, young adults and families. My area of specialization was how experiential and adventure-based techniques could assist inner-city youth and their families. I began my career working at a residential treatment center serving as a lead clinician, and I developed and implemented their first adventure/outdoor therapy model. Working throughout the country, I have served as therapist, wilderness therapist, clinical director, consultant, program owner, director or business development, chief operating officer, chief executive officer founder, and clinical concierge. I spent seven years in Hawaii working as a key employee with Pacific Quest, helping to build their Sustainable Growth model. I worked with hundreds of adolescents, young adults, adults, and their families. My understanding and expertise in both clinical and experiential techniques have allowed me to develop a highly interactive and effective model.
